Nintendo Does Well In May 2010 NDP ChartsNintendo's sales juggernauts sit atop the video gaming world for another month.
The NPD Group has released its sales number for the month of May (5/2/2010 - 5/29/2010), and Nintendo leads the charts once again. The Nintendo DS led hardware sales for the month, moving 383,700 units. The Wii wasn't far behind at 334,800 units sold. For comparision, the PlayStation 3 (154,500) and Xbox 360 (194,600) combined sold 349,100 units for the period. In other words, Nintendo is still handily outselling every competitor in the United States in both the console and portable arenas.

On the software side, Rockstar's burgeoning mega-franchise Red Dead Redemption took the top two spots, but Nintendo had some familiar representatives in the top 10. Super Mario Galaxy 2 sold 563,900 units to come in at number three, while Wii Fit, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and Pokemon SoulSilver occupied the sixth, seventh, and ninth spots, respectively.
Top 10 VG Console/Portable SKU's May 2010 Overall game industry (hardware, software, and accessories) sales for the month of May were down 5% year-on-year to $823 million, while year-to-date industry sales were down 10% to $5.56 billion. Hardware sales were particularly hard hit, falling 20% for both the month of May and year-to-date. NPD analyst Anita Frazier explained that while console sales were flat, price cuts resulted in less money being generated off of those sales when compared to last year. |
