Super Smash Bros. Brawl Leads Japanese Sales Charts

Nintendo released Super Smash Bros. Brawl in Japan on January 31 and, over the course of the next four days, gamers there snapped up over 800,000 copies of the Wii fighter.Media Create

Long-running sales chart topper Wii Fit was finally dethroned this week, amid a stable of new releases that also included Disgaea 3, Assassin's Creed and Suzumiya Haruhi no Tomadoi. Also debuting, but not performing quite as well as the Nintendo mascot fighter was Capcom's Devil May Cry 4 which moved nearly a quarter million units combined on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, making it one of three PS3 titles to chart in the top ten.

The best selling software in Japan for the week of January 28 to February 4, 2008 courtesy of Media Create, continues after the jump.

Year End 2007 Japanese Sales Data

Enterbrain Japan Famitsu publisher Enterbrain has released its latest data, a 2007 hardware and software sales round-up. According to Enterbrain's sales data and estimation, the domestic Japan market was worth ¥687.66 billion (US$6 billion). That 25 percent increase is an a record high for the domestic market. Here's the breakdown for those who are into numbers and money:

Total Sales by Year:

  • 2006 (December 26, 2005 ~ December 31, 2006)
    Hardware: Approximately 261.9 billion yen
    Software: Approx. 363.89 billion yen
    Total: Approx. 625.79 billion yen
  • 2007 (January 1, 2007 ~ December 30, 2007)
    Hardware: Approximately 327.41 billion yen
    Software: Approx. 360.25 billion yen
    Total: Approx. 687.66 billion yen

NPD Gaming Sales thru Oct 2007

NPD Group
Having crossed the $10 billion revenue mark as of the end of October, with its two biggest revenue generating months still to come. October '07 saw the industry pull in $1.1 billion, across hardware and software, ensuring that this year will be its best. Much of that revenue can be chalked up to higher console prices for the Wii and PlayStation 3, plus some very strong selling software.
