Nintendo Tops March US Video Game Sales with 'Pokemon White' and 'Black'

The 3DS launched last month to mixed results, as far as we can tell. NPD doesn't report hardware numbers, of course, but the agency reports that in its first seven days on the market, the handheld's performance "compares quite favorably to that of the best-selling dedicated handheld gaming platform of all time, the Nintendo DS." It sold about 100,000 fewer units than the 479,000 DS did in its launch month -- but that was a November.NPD Group

Nintendo previously said the console had the best first day of any handheld in US history. Even so, it managed not to be the top seller of the month. That honor goes to ... the Nintendo DS.

Oh, and God of War III sorta lost to Pokemon.

Combining Pokemon SoulSilver and HeartGold sales, the Nintendo powerhouse title sold 1.8 million units, while God of War III only sold 1.1 million. The actual ranking, however, pulls to two version apart to get this top 10 list of bestselling video games for March 2010:

March's U.S. Numbers..

PPNSteve's picture
February's U.S. software champ, Wii Fit, didn't have the strength to fight off the combined forces of Resident Evil 5, Pokemon Platinum and Halo Wars, the top three bestselling games in March.

NPD GroupThe Xbox 360 version of the survival horror adventure walked away with the number one spot, moving 938,000 copies to U.S. consumers. Its PlayStation 3 counterpart moved 585,000, giving Sony's current generation platform three titles in the top ten, including MLB 09: The Show and Killzone 2. The latter of those saw sales close to that of its debut month, moving another 296,000 copies in March. Sony announced earlier today that Killzone 2 has sold 1 million copies worldwide since launch.

Chart regulars Wii Play and Mario Kart Wii combined for another half million in sales, with 2K Sports' MLB game rounding out the top ten. Missing from the top ten is Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, which looks to have sold on par with EEDAR's estimate of 200,000 copies or less. Guess we'll go with "risk" on that.

All the fun numbers and more, after the break..
