This past weekend, the Nintendo 3DS officially launched (in Japan), moving more than 350,000 units in just two days on the market. Not bad! Nintendo 3DS games managed to sell pretty well too, with the latest Professor Layton game performing better than anything else for Nintendo’s new portable. But it wasn’t the week’s most popular game.
Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask sold nearly 120,000 copies during its debut, enough to nab third place. The top two spots were occupied by two PSP games, Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity and SD Gundam G Generation World. Looking through the rest of the top ten, almost everything is new, thanks to strong sales of Nintendo 3DS games, a new Disgaea and a new Idolmaster. Komami's latest YuGiOh Champ Series game, Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s World Championship 2011: Over the Nexus, debuts at a respectable 18th place. Here are the bestselling games in Japan for the week of February 21 to 27. Welcome, Nintendo 3DS games.

But it wasn't just Gran Turismo 5 making big moves this week in Japan. The latest Super Robot Taisen title for the Nintendo DS and sporty game potpourri Mario Sports Mix for the Wii also sold big. Gran Turismo 5's take also benefited from sales of the PlayStation 3 bundle that sports a sweet blue chassis and a copy of Polyphony Digital's racing game thrown in. PSP and God Eater Burst retained the top spots on the Japanese hardware and software charts in the week ended November 7, 2010. With the release of Pokemon Black and Pokemon White in Japan last week, there was never even a glimmer of hope for any other title, and the very best position on the weekly sales chart that any game could have dreamed of achieving would be second. Taking the combined sales of the Pokemon games into consideration, second may as well be first, because the number of units Nintendo and Game Freak’s latest titles managed to sell is… unnatural. According to Media Create, over 2.5 million copies of Pokemon Black and White were sold for the week ending September 19th. The next best-selling game? Debut title Front Mission: Evolved for PS3, with a (comparatively) pitiful 51,000 units sold. Why did they even bother… Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s Tag Force 5 for PSP also debuted on the Japanese Software Sales Chart this week, and sold almost 46,000 copies to place in third. Another newcomer to the chart, and another heavy-hitter (only in other regions of the world), Halo: Reach launched in Japan and sold 45,000 copies to chart at No. 4, helping the Xbox 360 sell 3,000 more units than the usual weekly total. Wii Party was semi-oblivious to all of the action taking place further up the listing and continued to do business as usual, this week selling 36 500 copies and charted at No. 5, down from No. 3 last week. Just a few thousand more units to go until that one million life-to-date mark… One-time chart dominator Monster Hunter Diary: Poka Poka Ailu Village slipped down to No. 6 from No. 2 and sold 28,000 units for its trouble, while last week’s No. 1, One Piece: Gigant Battle, sold just over 28,000 units to place in at No. 7. Debut title Blue Roses: Yousei to Aoi Hitomi no Senshitachi for PSP landed on the chart at No. 8 with nearly 10,000 copies sold, Taiko Drum Master DS: Dororon! Battle With the Ghouls!! for the DS sold almost 9,000 units to sit at No. 9 (up from No. 13 last week), and Super Mario Galaxy 2 held on at No. 10 with 8,000 units sold. Software Chart

After Namco’s dominance in the Japanese software sales arena last week with Another Century’s Episode R on PS3, it’s now Capcom’s turn to take the crown and sell a whopping amount of games with debut title Monster Hunter Diary: Pokapoka Ailu Village for the PSP. This past week in Japan, Monster Hunter Diary: Pokapoka Ailu Village sold an incredible 256,000 units to easily become the top selling game in Media Create’s Japanese Software Sales Chart. Another debut title, Ace Combat X2: Joint Assault (also for PSP) sold an admirable 58,000 units to place in second on the sales chart. Wii Party keeps on trucking, now sitting at No. 3 from No. 2, and selling almost 55,000 units this past week in Japan to bring its life-to-date sales total in the country to 860,000 copies, while last week’s chart topper, Another Century’s Episode R, moves down to No. 4 on the chart and sells 28,000 copies. Another new title, Hakuouki: Zuisouroku Portable for the PSP, sold 24,500 units to occupy fifth place, as Inazuma Eleven 3: World Challenge!! Spark / Bomber sells almost 13,000 copies and shifts down from No. 4 last week to No. 6. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a non-mover at No. 7 with 12,000 units sold (with a life-to-date sales total of 795,000 units), while Art Academy for DS is another stubborn title, content to remain at No. 8 with 10,000 units sold. Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon X takes a walk down to No. 9 from No. 6 this week with 9000 copies, and Sengoku Basara 3 is forced down to No. 10 from No. 5 after selling only 9000 units.
