The only new video game release that came close to threatening Nintendo’s software domination this week was Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey. The Nintendo DS role-playing managed a third place debut, beating out less impressive placements from RPG peers Blue Dragon: Ikai no Kyoujuu and the White Knight Chronicles EX Edition re-release.

The latest Japanese game sales have hit, and once again, the PS3 is the top home gaming console. Surprisingly, with no new releases, the PS3 hardware dropped only 5,000 units. This is likely due to Silver Week being last week, which is a new 3 day holiday in Japan started this year.

The new PS3 retains its second place position on Media Create's hardware chart, probably in part thanks to the release of Tales of Vesperia for the platform. The appeal of less expensive hardware probably doesn't hurt. While sales were down slightly from the week

In the second week of the slimmer PS3's existence at retail, the console sold another 55,000 units. So things appear to be lookin' up for the PS3, but we'll wager that the console's bestselling days aren't yet here.
Sometime around December and early January should see the Media Create hardware chart drowning in bright PS3s.

The latest Media Create sales are now in, showing that Nintendo is continuing its dominance of the Japanese charts in the week prior to the PS3 Slim launch. This week it is the Mii-meets-Animal Crossing title Friend Collection on DS that claims the No.1 spot thanks to strong word-of-mouth. Dragon Quest IX is not far behind at No.2, with sales now nearly at the 3.8 million mark and with news of a renewed advertising campaign due in Japan later this month, the predicted sales of 5 million in Japan alone looks like becoming a reality sooner rather than later.
Wii Sports Resort plods along nicely at No.3 this week, proving any doubters wrong by storming well past the million milestone and still going strong. The same goes for Monster Hunter 3, which even though Capcom shipped a million units on Day One, was thought to be a massive disappointment by some sectors due to it only selling half of the amount in its first week. Now, though, Capcom has gone on record to state it is confident the million will definitely be sold through in the near future and this week's Media Create ranking on 5th with sales now at ~840,000 units, pushing through another ~35,000 over the past seven days indicate Capcom certainly does not look like it will be wrong in its assumption at all.
The only Nintendo-related new entries in the Top 10 come from Bandai Namco with Super Robot Gakuen at No.7 and the Nintendo-Nikkei co-developed Money Training product for DS, which starts slow with just over 21,000 units sold, but will likely be a slow burner like Friend Collection recently was and Brain Training was all those years ago.
Check out the list below, along with the hardware chart:
Media Create Top 50 - 24th-30th August, 2009

The Mii collecting game beats out DS rival Dragon Quest IX to secure the top spot once again amid a non-eventful release week. Stuff like Melty Blood: Actress Again and Ookami Kakushi manage to sell well enough to make an appearance in's weekly top ten, but not well enough to defeat bestsellers like Monster Hunter 3 for the Wii.
Of course, when Nintendo refers to evergreen titles, it also means much of what consistently hovers in the top 20 and 30 bestselling titles in Japan. Those are all listed right after this, Media Create's top Japanese software for the week of August 17 to 23.
