PPN Studio had the chance to checkout the SacAnime Summer 2024 event over the Labor day weekend, August 30 through Sept 1, 204, and let me tell you.. It was crowded! Over 33,000 people attended the con and most of them were all there on Saturday. We cruised the various sections and stages offered and while weren’t allowed to photograph the special guests or any of the live events, we did grab some shots of the general convention, exhibitor floor, and the crowds. Here is what we have. The Cosplay was Fantastic Now we move on to the the very popular cosplayers. There were 1000’s of them ranging from minimally dressed up to full on anime-perfect costumes and more. While we unable to photo the contests and other events for cosplayers, we did manage to grab some shots of quite a few of them as they walked around the convention. I just wish we had more time to set up for better shots and do justice to these fine folk in there awesome costumes. But it’s a con and it was packed, so this is what we have for ya. There were so many more cosplayers than I could even try to photograph, and every single one of them were having a great time at the show. Here’s a few more. Rolling Stones Drummer Charlie Watts Dies At 80
Charlie Watts, the unshakeable drummer for The Rolling Stones, died this morning. According to a publicist, he died in a hospital in London, surrounded by family. No cause of death was given. He was 80 years old. Watts was born on June 2, 1941. Growing up, he was mostly a fan of jazz — people like Duke Ellington and Charlie Parker. It was listening to Gerry Mulligan’s “Walking Shoes” as a kid that inspired him to play drums. After bouncing around various jazz clubs as the British blues scene was picking up, he met Mick Jagger and then the rest of the Stones. Watts played his first gig with them in 1963. Where most rock bands take their cues from the drummer, Watts was the type to hang back. He told NPR in 2012 that in the early days, he’d have to sit close to guitarist Keith Richards’ amplifier during live set. “And they weren’t very big amplifiers. So with an audience shouting, I needed that to know where the changes came,” Watts said. Watts gave off a different vibe from his bandmates in more ways than one. Aesthetically he preferred tailored suits, while the others took the stage with their more bohemian looks. He also did his best to stay out of the limelight, using some of the band’s early successes to buy a 16th century mansion in Sussex. But he was no less of a core member of the group, giving the band a steady backdrop to rock on for nearly 60 years. […]
Continue readingRush Drummer Neil Peart Dies at Age 67
Neil Peart, legendary drummer and lyricist for the band Rush, died this past Tuesday, January 7 in Santa Monica, CA. He was 67-years-old. The cause of death was brain cancer, “which he had been quietly battling for three years”, according to Elliot Mintz, a spokesperson for the Peart family. Peart retired in 2015. His retirement also marked the end of Rush. Rush members Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson have issued the following statement regarding the death of drummer Neil Peart, who passed away earlier this week at the age of 67 from brain cancer: “It is with broken hearts and the deepest sadness that we must share the terrible news that on Tuesday our friend, soul brother and band mate of over 45 years, Neil, has lost his incredibly brave three and a half year battle with brain cancer (Glioblastoma). We ask that friends, fans, and media alike understandably respect the family’s need for privacy and peace at this extremely painful and difficult time. Those wishing to express their condolences can choose a cancer research group or charity of their choice and make a donation in Neil Peart’s name. “Rest in peace brother. “Neil Peart September 12, 1952 – January 7, 2020” Our thoughts are with Peart’s loved ones during this difficult time. RIP Neil, you inspired many and will be missed by many more.

Continue readingIRON MAIDEN take IGN behind-the-scenes on their huge, game-inspired LEGACY OF THE BEAST World Tour…
Wednesday, February 20, 2019 — London, UK – In advance of the 2019 North, Central and South American legs of IRON MAIDEN’s Legacy Of The Beast World Tour, gaming and entertainment giant IGN were granted unique behind-the-scenes access at several shows during the band’s 2018 European run. Unveiling the story of how one of music’s most iconic global names took inspiration from their own mobile game to create arguably their most celebrated live show of all time, the video piece features interviews with both Iron Maiden’s drummer Nicko McBrain and Manager, Rod Smallwood, on their hallowed stage at Birmingham’s Genting Arena last year. The game was created in close collaboration with IRON MAIDEN and its management team, with the band visiting the game studio in April 2016 prior to the game’s launch in July that year. MAIDEN founder member and bassist STEVE HARRIS recently, personally oversaw the design of a ‘Bass Eddie’ character centred on the classic “Fear of the Dark (Live)” single artwork, that is now not too dissimilar to ‘Arry himself! Iron Maiden: Legacy of the Beast, is available now for free on Apple’s App Store and Google Play. The Legacy Of The Beast World Tour sees the stage design built around the different interlocking “worlds” of the game with a set list covering a large selection of Eighties material with a handful of surprises from later albums to add diversity. Rock and gaming fans will know that MAIDEN pioneered the game/tour concept with their own Ed Hunter project back in 1999. Dave Shack, Managing […]

Broadway Comics And Cards Closing Its Doors After Almost 30 Years SACRAMENTO (via CBS13) – Broadway comics and Cards have been open next to tower cafe for nearly 3 decades. But rising rents and a shift to more online sales has forced the owner to make a tough decision. Wedged in between Tower Café and Joe Marty’s Bar and Grille in Sacramento, CA, is Broadway Comics and Cards. “I’ve been here since February 19, 1988,” said owner Wilson Lew. Lew has thousands of comics stacked in boxes, kept in plastic. And some are from decades ago. “Oh my gosh, this smells so good,” said Lew thumbing through a 1972 Mister Miracle book. Like a true fan, he can tell quality, with a whiff. “It’s a different experience to have a comic book in your hands and have that experience,” Lew continued. When Broadway Comics and Cards opened for business 30 years ago, comics were a hot commodity and business was good. “There would be people coming in, lining up buying two, three, four, five copies,” said Lew, “one to read and two to save.” But since then, times have changed. “Everybody is buying online or digitally downloading,” said Lew. Walk-up sales have fallen off and the cost to stay open continues to rise. “They raised my rent twice in the last 12 months,” he continued. Lew tried to supplement the books with popular trends over the years. “Pokemon was big; it was huge,” said Lew. “There would be like five monster zones,” said Matthew Henderson, […]
